Speech Therapy 101: Helping Children, Teens, and Adults Find Their Voice
When most people hear "speech therapy," they often picture a young child learning to pronounce their "R" sounds.
While that's certainly one part of speech therapy, it's only a small piece of what Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) do.
At Storify Therapy Services, we believe communication is about so much more than words. It's about connecting with others, expressing your thoughts and feelings, building relationships, and participating fully in everyday life. Whether you're concerned about your toddler's language development, your child's speech clarity, your teen's social communication skills, or changes in communication following an illness or injury, speech therapy can provide practical support and meaningful change.
What Can a Speech-Language Pathologist Help With?
Speech-Language Pathologists work with children, adolescents, adults, and seniors across a wide range of communication and swallowing concerns.
They can help with:
Speech sound development and pronunciation
Delayed language development
Understanding and using language effectively
Stuttering and other fluency challenges
Voice concerns, such as hoarseness or vocal strain
Social communication skills, including understanding conversations and social cues
Childhood Apraxia of Speech and other motor speech disorders
Feeding and swallowing difficulties
Communication changes following a concussion, stroke, brain injury, or neurological condition
Every person's communication journey is unique, and therapy is tailored to meet their individual strengths, goals, and needs.
When Should I Consider Speech Therapy for My Child?
Parents are often the first to notice when something doesn't seem quite right.
You might be wondering if your child is "just a late talker," whether they'll grow out of it, or if now is the right time to seek support.
If your child:
Isn't using many words by 18–24 months
Has difficulty putting words together into sentences
Is difficult for others to understand
Frequently substitutes or leaves out speech sounds
Has a stutter that is causing frustration or has persisted over time
Struggles to follow directions or express their thoughts
Finds social interactions or conversations challenging
...it may be worth booking an assessment.
An assessment doesn't automatically mean therapy is needed. Sometimes families leave feeling reassured that development is on track. Other times, they leave with practical strategies that can make communication easier at home, school, and in everyday life.
Early support often helps children build confidence while reducing frustration for everyone involved.
Speech Therapy Supports Adults Too
Speech therapy isn't only for children.
Adults may seek support after a stroke, concussion, brain injury, or neurological diagnosis. Others come because they've noticed changes in their voice, have lived with a stutter for years, or are experiencing swallowing difficulties.
Whatever the reason, communication challenges can affect confidence, relationships, work, and overall quality of life. Speech therapy provides practical strategies to help people regain skills, build confidence, and stay connected to the people and activities that matter most.
What Happens During an Assessment?
One of the questions we hear most often is, "What should I expect?"
At Storify Therapy Services, we know that reaching out can feel like a big step. Our goal is to make the process as comfortable and supportive as possible.
During your first appointment, your Speech-Language Pathologist will spend time getting to know you or your child. They'll ask questions about your concerns, learn about your history, and complete age-appropriate activities or assessments to better understand communication strengths and areas where support may be helpful.
At the end of the assessment, you'll have an opportunity to ask questions, discuss the results, and talk through recommendations together.
If therapy is recommended, we'll create a plan that fits your goals, your schedule, and your family's unique needs.
Why Families Choose Private Speech Therapy
Many families are referred to public services through Alberta Health Services or school-based programs, and these services play an important role in supporting our communities.
Private speech therapy offers another option, particularly for families who are looking for:
Earlier access to services with shorter wait times
Flexible appointment scheduling, including after-school hours when available
Individualized therapy tailored to their goals
Consistency by working with the same clinician throughout treatment
Greater involvement for parents and caregivers in the therapy process
Many extended health benefit plans cover Speech-Language Pathology services, making private therapy more accessible than many families realize.
Our Approach at Storify Therapy Services
At Storify, we believe therapy works best when people feel welcomed, understood, and supported.
Our Speech-Language Pathologists work collaboratively with families, educators, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to ensure care is coordinated and meaningful. We focus on building confidence, celebrating progress, and creating practical strategies that can be used beyond the therapy room.
Whether we're helping a preschooler say their first words more clearly, supporting a student to communicate with greater confidence, or working with an adult rebuilding communication after an injury, our goal is always the same to help people feel more connected, capable, and confident in everyday life.
Taking the First Step
If you've been wondering whether speech therapy might help, you don't have to have all the answers before reaching out.
Sometimes all you need is a conversation.
We're happy to answer your questions, talk through your concerns, and help you decide whether an assessment is the right next step. Whether therapy is needed or not, you'll leave with a better understanding of where things are at and what options are available.
At Storify Therapy Services, we're here to help you or your loved one communicate with confidence because every story deserves to be heard.
